Are Diet Pills Safe?

February 12, 2009

One of the ways that are used to lose weight are diet pills. There are a variety of diet pill products available on the market: Phenylpropanolamine, Hoodia, Ephedra (which has been banned by the FDA), Adipex, Xenadrine, etc. However, many of them are not well-regulated by the FDA (they are not required to be), and some are even scam (not necessarily those mentioned above). So is it safe to use them?

Well, this is a hard question to answer. They can help you lower your calorie intake quite rapidly, but they aren't always good for your body. You should not rely only on diet pills to reduce your body fat, and if you use them, you should focus on the short-term. Diet pills are chemicals that burn the fats inside, but they can have nasty consequences as well, such as muscle cramps, allergic reactions, irritability, increased urinary function, heart palpitations, insomnia, and feeling a bit jittery or dizzy. Some brands contain extremely dangerous ingredients for your health, so you should be very careful. Even if they are portrayed as being natural products, this does not mean by a long shot that they are safe.

When using diet pills, you should make sure that they meet the following criteria:

- they should not contain toxic ingredients;
- they should include natural components;
- they should be produced by a well-known company that has been around for a long time;
- they should be easily available;
- you should be able to get information about them before you buy.

There are other things to consider when thinking about using diet pills, but these are the main ones. As with any dietary supplement that are made available to people who want to lose weight, individual results will vary.

Diet pills can be used to effectively reduce your weight if they are taken in conjunction with a well laid out dietary program. They are meant to supplement your diet. If you know what to eat to lower your fat percentage, diet pills will only help in accelerating the process. However, they can prove to be addictive, both physically and psychologically. That's why they should be taken with caution. But when you reach your target weight, you should be able to stop taking diet pills and concentrate on your diet.

If you can avoid it, don't take diet pills to get rid of your fat. Even if you are looking for a quick way to lose weight, you should refrain from using them. There are better and healthier long-term methods that you can use instead. Diet pills are not magic bullets and cannot replace a good and healthy diet and exercise. A good diet will help you eat less without feeling deprived. It will also help you maintain your ideal weight once you get there, so you do not start a yo-yo pattern of losing weight only to regain it when you stop taking diet pills. Adopt a healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle, and you can say goodbye to your oversized clothes!
